Life + Style: New York edition

Friday is finally here! The luster of staying in hotels has really begun to wear off and he weekend is the light at the end of the tunnel. I am so excited for moving day Sunday, I can't wait! Ready to see all of our stuff, ready to be unpacked, ready to be settled in our new place. Stay tuned for future blog posts full of photos from our New York adventure. I'm sure moving day will be photo worthy as well...too much stuff and too many people crammed into a ity-bity living space! We'll see how it goes. In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend everyone. Soon to officially be Life+Style in New York City!

Vintage Fans

We made it out of Indy with all of our stuff packed up but one last thing, my swank fan. I had taken it to the antique store to get the rusted bottom replaced with new felt. It is ready and waiting to be picked up, but the place has crazy hours and I just couldn't make it there before we left. Hoping Mike will able to pick it up next week while he's in Indy. There are so many things we had to part with for our move to New York and I am excited this is one of the items that will be coming with us...well assuming we can coordinate a time to pick it up and get it out here!

Below are a few photos from the Pottery Barn catalog that also feature some cool vintage fans.

Moving Day 1

Well today's the day I head to New York! I have been delinquent on posting as the past week has just been a whirlwind. Between movers and travel and huge presentations at work, there has been little time for much else. However today's the day! Mike has been in New York since Saturday and I'll be joining him this afternoon. By the time we finally get into our apartment on Sunday, we'll have been staying in a variety of hotels for the past 12 days. I am so excited to be settled in our new place. I am looking forward to seeing all of our stuff coming off the moving truck...also excited there will be a team of movers to unpack it all! I can't wait to wake up, after sleeping in my very own bed, pour a cup of tea and look out at our view! Soon. Soon.

Right Now

- Life is busier than ever before
- Every day I feel excited and overwhelmed and anxious and excited again
- We've sold one car and will sell the second this weekend.
- It feels kind of weird to be without our cars
- Saturday will be full of final decisions, what goes, what doesn't
- After this weekend we'll be leaving behind only what the movers will be packing up
- I am sad to be leaving my friends
- I am excited to get to spend a few extra days with my parents
- Our house will soon be empty and I will be sad to see it bare, bare walls, bare floors
- I am eager to get unpacked and settled in our new place
- I am excited for our new furniture to arrive
- I can't wait to wake up in our apartment, open the blinds, admire the view, and exhale

It's Complicated - Garden

Last night Mike and I had a movie night and watched "It's Complicated". I thought it was hilarious, but the best part ... her garden!

Maryl Streep plays a baker trained in France. Her garden is more than Martha Stewart perfection. How lovely to stroll about and pluck one of those beautiful cabbages ... or eat a tomato straight from the vine! I would love a vegetable garden like this.

"The idea was it was meant to look like a real cook's garden," said Jon Hutman, the film's production designer. "We try to make the movies look real, but a very delicious version of real."

The garden is a French potager garden design. I found that Potager gardens combine the utilitarian nature of the English kitchen garden with the style and grace of French fashion. It is basically an ornamental vegetable garden. Plants are chosen for both their edible and ornamental natures and are put together in such a way that it looks pretty while still providing food for the household ... which makes sense for the character, a baker who got her training in France. I love it!

I was slightly disappointed but slightly relieved to find the vegetables were grown in a greenhouse for two months before the garden scene was shot and many of the tomatoes had been wired to the vine! Oh movie magic.

The director, Nancy Meyers, also designed Diane Keaton's house in "Something's Gotta Give" ... I loved that house! Anyway, she took the same amazing approach with this Santa Babara garden. Pictures below of her garden and beautiful cook's kitchen ... enjoy!

Breakfast at Wimbeldon

Every year Mike and I have a Breakfast at Wimbledon party and this year is no exception. We have a houseful of guests coming for tennis and mimosa. Hooray!

Menu

Strawberries and Cream - a Wimbledon tradition
Shortbread
Egg and Sausage Quiche
Tomato Pie

Potatoes

The Wimbledon Championships, or simply Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is generally considered the most prestigious.

It has been held at the All England Club in the London suburb of Wimbledon since 1877.

Wimbledon traditions include the eating of strawberries and cream, drinking Pimms spritzers, royal patronage and a strict dress code for competitors.

Cheerio!
